Micro-mechanical Workshop

The workshop is managed by Yvon CABIROU (AI CNRS)
The scientific contact is Boris BARBOUR

Several machine tools are available:

  • a CNC machine
  • a conventional milling machine
  • a lathe
  • a circular saw
  • polishing and grinding machines
Access to the machines

Users are forbidden from operating the machines for security reasons.

Operation of the service

The service is available to members of the IBENS.

All requests for work should be submitted via the email list of the users committee cu-atelier at biologie.ens.fr and should include a sufficiently detailed description to enable evaluation of any difficulties of fabrication and commercial availability. In practice it is therefore usually necessary to include a technical drawing, sketch or photo illustrating the request. Please note that duplication of commercially available items will receive a low priority.

Yvon will generally process requests in order of reception, but small items may be intercalated with larger projects. Requests for urgent processing are rarely granted and are decided by the scientific contact not the workshop manager. So please plan ahead.

Before fulfilling a request, Yvon will produce a technical drawing. This both ensures the quality of the result and and simplifies future modifications.

If local fabrication is not possible, Yvon will offer advice about external contracting possibilities.

The cost of running the workshop is billed to its users in proportion to their use of the service, counted as the time Yvon spends on fulfilling requests. The main costs are replacement tools and common materials. Specialised tools or materials may be charged directly to the requesting teams.
